I survived opening.
But only just barely.
Friday, I saw Bryan and Dad as they moved Bryan into his new apartment. He has one of the apartments we just built and opened last week. It is really really nice.
Saturday I got to work and Patience and I (yes, that is her real name…and she has a lot of it) drove all over campus all day delivering paperwork and picking paperwork up. It was without a doubt the easiest, smoothest, opening day I have ever observed/been a part of.
Then the night came.
And I am the AC on duty. Thanks Mark.
None of the ID cards were working to access our new Honors Living Learning Community (another complex we just built and opened last week). You cannot get into any building without a working ID card. I got on the phone with our ID center and Sheryl began working on the problem. Then she asked if we were having any problems with Kays Hall or Northpark Quads. I hadn’t heard of anything.
After a couple hours, I contacted Kays Hall and asked. As my luck would have it, they were having problems too. I vowed not to call NPQ. It was already 8 pm and no solution in sight. Around 11 pm, I called NPQ and sure enough…they were having problems. And STILL no solution in sight.
We came up with an action plan to get people into the buildings without compromising security and the phone calls/text messages finally started to die down around 3:30 am so I was able to go to sleep. Very early Sunday morning (too early, actually), Heath woke me up to go to church. I was very much against the idea but finally agreed to attend Sacrament Meeting.
If I haven’t mentioned it before, being pregnant with twins is completely exhausting…even when I get 13 hours of sleep a night (hasn’t happened in months!). Saturday night I got about 3 hours. I was tired. I made it through Sacrament Meeting—I was actually proud of myself. Then I went home to get a few hours of sleep before I had to report to work at 4 pm.
Wouldn’t you know that being on duty prevented me from getting more than 10-15 minutes of sleep at a time? I showed up to work at 4 and Patrick, my Director and April, an Associate Director (my boss, Julie was out sick) asked if I would be okay setting up and working at the Luau Residence Life throws every year the day after we open. I was in charge of decorations. I already had a ton of volunteers to help out with the set up (I can’t carry that stuff!) so I said yes. They clearly didn’t believe me. I guess I looked as though I was going to fall over any moment (they were aware of how horrible my night had been).
Heath and the girls came to help with set up and to join me for dinner at the Luau. Kalyn and Keali helped pass out Leis and they were adorable as they did so! I have the sweetest, cutest kids. After I ate a little from Kalyn’s plate (my tummy wasn’t so great), I really started to feel sick. I left the Luau a bit after 7 and we went home to get the girls ready for bed.
I got sick almost as soon as we got home and I’ve been that way ever since. I am hoping it is just a combination of stress and lack of sleep, but I haven’t ruled out catching whatever Julie has. ID card problems plagued me last night as well, so I didn’t get as much sleep as I need. I got up to help Heath get Kalyn ready for school, and then we together took Keali to her first day of school.
I guess Heath saw how close I was to losing it when I went to tell Keali goodbye, because he said, “Don’t upset her.” She had been very shy when first we walked in, but had quickly started playing with the other kids. She handled it so much better than I did, but I did manage to keep myself from bursting into tears until the second I got into the car to leave. We came home and I went right back to bed after calling in sick.
Heath and his Mom cleaned up the apartment while I slept, then Heath went to work. I have to pick up the girls in a few minutes and I can’t wait to see how Keali did today. I am still sick. Heath is still at work. I hope we can have an easy night though.

Wow, that sounds like a lot for any women, let alone one who's pregnant, let alone with twins. I hope you feel better soon. Katherine's first day of kindergarten is Thurs. and I'm suppose to go to a parent breakfast right after. Yeah, a preggo mom trying to keep it together in front of all the parents. Sounds fun huh!
