Happy New Year!  I am not one to really celebrate a new year.  It's just another day right?  Today was okay.  Heath is starting to feel a little better--He finally went to the doc. yesterday and has a slew of things wrong with him.  We are finally working on getting them cleared up (though some lab tests are still in the works).  Heath went to work this morning only to find out once he got there that he didn't have to be there.  Bummer.  But he came home and got to go back to bed.  I played with the girls and worked on the baby quilts I've been doing during my break.

This afternoon we went to Heath's parents house to eat black eyed peas and hog jowls.  According to my in-laws, there is an old superstition that if you eat black eyed peas and hog jowles on the first day of the year, you will have plenty of money through the whole year.  I'll give it a shot.  I didn't actually eat the hog jowls, but I did eat the black eyed peas (one of my favs) that were cooked in the same pot.  We also had traditional cornbread (I love to eat it with honey) and fried potatoes.  Without a doubt, my mother in law makes the best fried potatoes.  It was a yummy lunch and I have no desire to eat dinner.

We also had a first.  Today Kalyn got her first splinter.  And it was amazing to behold!  She came to me and said she hurt herself on the bathroom door (at the in-law's).  I looked at her finger and it just looked scratched.  Then I looked closer and thought I saw a splinter.  As soon as I got close to her hand, Kalyn started screaming and thrashing all over the place.  I kid you not--it was 15 minutes of screaming, thrashing, nashing of teeth, etc.  As I pulled the first little bit of it out of her finger, she was screaming at the top of her lungs, "I don't have a splinter.  I don't have a splinter!"  It was all I could do not to laugh.  After that I let her calm down, then asked her if I could look at the rest.  It took her a little while to allow me back at her finger (I wouldn't let her have a band aid until I was sure the whole thing was out--that ended up being why she allowed me to finish) and even then I wasn't allowed to do anything unless I did it "gently."  I very gently pulled a large splinter from her finger.  Apparently the piece of wood had been damming the blood, because as soon as it left her body, the blood began to flow.  And Kalyn FREAKED out even worse.  Finally we got the band aid on, and about an hour ago, Kalyn told me that her finger felt better, and thanks for taking out the splinter.  Wow!  Recognized for my work in my own lifetime!  What an accomplishment!

I finished one of the quilts.  The other should be done tomorrow.  Can't wait to get it done.  I also made Kalyn and Keali each a pillow for their beds.  The fabric is cute.  Pink with hearts and basketballs!  I quilted their names in them too so we won't have any fights over whose is whose.
